Do you know Tractors and all sorts of farm machines can be very dangerous? Little people love to play with toy tractors but real tractors must be handled with care never go near unless an adult is there with you!
Did you know that children under 7 should not be on tractors at all - to be allowed they should have a specially fitted seat and comply with farm safety risk assesment paperwork!
Tractors and farm machines are not toys, they can be very dangerous even for adults and especially for children. You should never play with, in or near farm machines. You could fall, you get caught and sucked into a machine, you could get run over or crushed!
Don't run out in front of or behind a tractor!
Don't go near a pto shaft it could spin you around and rip your arm off or kill you!
never press buttons on machines!
wear reflective jackets if you have to be down the farm so you are seen easier.
never be near a machine without an adult!
if you are in a tractor with an adult make sure you both buckle up and close the doors correctly!
never climb into trailers or buckets of machinery even if they are not connected to the machine, they can be unstable and topple.
What is a pto Shaft and why are they dangerous?
A PTO Shaft is a part at the back of the tractor used to attach machinary that needs to spin on the back of the tractor. The PTO Shaft should always have a safety cover on it even when it is in use. A PTO shaft spins around very very quickly (9 times a second - 180 times in 20 seconds!). Many farm accidents have happened with the PTO shaft. When it doesn't have the safety cover on, loose clothing can be sucked in and with the speed and force of it farmers and children have been sucked into the shaft and very seriously injured or even killed. Take a look at a video from the FRS at the Connacht Spring Show 2015, showing what can happen when the PTO shaft is left uncovered.
